Abalone is a natural multi colored mother of pearl that is the shell of a marine mollusk. It was important to the indigenous people of Catalina Island as a food source, and for tools, ornaments and trade.
The double wave like design in this ring is a koru, a Maori design depicting the unfurling of a fern frond. It symbolizes new beginnings and positive changes. The circular shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement, while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin. The way life seems to change yet stay the same.
