Spirals in art appeared at about the same time as early man (around 300,000 years ago). Our ancestors must have seen the prevalence of this shape in nature: ferns unfurling, the Nautilus and other shells on land and sea, and the spinning galaxies above them. Spirals have come to symbolize the journey and unfolding of life.
